Embracing the clock change

The theme for my classes this week is linked to the clocks going back this coming Sunday which marks a return to Greenwich Mean Time.

The falling leaves of Autumn have been happening for a while now and as the clocks change and daylight saving time ends, it’s another useful reminder to embrace the flow of life, recognising that change is inevitable.

Autumn is very much about transition— nature lets go and resets. We can take a cue from this seasonal shift by embracing change rather than resisting it. Our mindful practices including Yoga and meditation are great tools to support this. By staying connected to our practice, we learn to accept impermanence as we notice changes in our body, moment by moment, practise by practise.

Here are 7 suggested ways to help you further prepare for as well as embrace the upcoming end of daylight saving time and the changing of the clocks.

  1. Keep a consistent sleep schedule: Gradually adjust your bedtime and wake-up routine to avoid a sleep disruption.

  2. Maximise morning light: Use the extra morning sunlight for an early yoga practise to boost your mood and energy.

  3. Prioritise your mental health: Focus on self care, reach out to friends and family and don't hesitate to seek professional help when needed, especially if you’re prone to feeling low during darker days.

  4. Stay active whilst embracing nature: Get moving! Yoga or a brisk walk outside can keep your energy and support a strong immune system.

  5. Declutter and reset: If you need to, try and let go of any physical clutter to create space in your home and see if this helps you feel lighter in yourself.

  6. Create a cozy environment: Make your space inviting with candles and seasonal lights to combat the early evening darkness.

  7. Practice gratitude: Reflect on what’s working in your life, and find joy in the small wins and victories.
